Case Studies

We actively encourage sports organisations to share examples of good practice with the sporting community. Below are two case studies of young people who are volunteering their time within community sport in Cambridge.

A. Basketball

Q. How many hours per week do you volunteer?
A. 1.5 per week

Q. Do you feel you get enough training as a volunteer?
A. I’d like to gain some coaching awards such as Level I Basketball coaching certificate

Q. What do you feel the club could do to improve your experiences of volunteering?
A. Provide confidence building & communication skills for basketball through more hands on experience

Q. How do you believe that the club/organisation has benefited from volunteers?
A. Helped to make activities more efficient and run more smoothly

Q. Do you link with your local sports development unit?
A. Yes, we have good links with the Cambridge City Council Sports Development Service

Q. What training have you received?
A. On the job support from a head coach

Q. How could volunteering be improved?
A. Increased awareness of opportunities from club and local information

A. Top Link festivals, Primary Schools coaching, Multi-skills festivals and also act as a young ambassador for sport

Q. What sport are you involved in?
A. Swimming, Netball, Athletics, Waterpolo, Rounders, Netball and Hockey

Q. How many hours per week do you volunteer?
A. 2 hours

Q. What support do you feel you need as a volunteer?
A. Help with the children and the organisation on the session

Q. How do you believe that the club/organisation has benefited from volunteers?
A. The tournaments have run smoothly with my help and I have also helped with the organisation of the tournaments and coaching sessions

Q. How could your club/organisation support you more as a volunteer?
A. More volunteers to work as a team to help with the actual game activities

Q. What would encourage more volunteers into sport?
A. Helping children learning about the sports and more motivational teachers

A. Yes, through teachers at school

A. Hockey coaching, swimming and waterpolo training

A. I would but in full-time education and have no time to any more than I currently do

A. More awareness of the opportunities available in the community
